Best book to learn dog scanning with ultrasound

November 2018 has finally seen a gap in the literature filled. Very few books are dedicated to the use of ultrasound exclusively in dogs, and none, that I am aware of, dedicated to pregnancy diagnosis specifically.

There are an excellent range of veterinary textbooks, but most are in the £80 or $100+ price range, and are impenetrable to the beginner. In addition, only a chapter or even just a few pages are devoted to pregnancy scanning. As such, for over a decade, pregnancy scanning in dogs has been largely self-taught. Ultrasound training courses are available in the United Kingdom (but there are currently none in the United States). Only the Vet Image Solutions course has been running for a substantial period of time (8 years) and is taught by a professional sonographer, but even after attending a thorough course such as this one, a supporting textbook to reference was sorely lacking.

This book was designed to meet that need. It covers everything from basic ultrasound physics through to cutting-edge scientific research on hydrometra and related conditions. We recommend this book for:

  • Veterinary students with an interest in small animal fertility work
  • Vet nurses
  • Dog breeders
